£120 to £150 a day, depending on experience. That’s £600 to £750 a week for a full five days.

The job
This is one of our groundworker jobs in Surrey, working across Surrey and South West London with a small, busy crew.
You’re the one keeping the job moving. Dragging brash, feeding the chipper, logging up, roping and lowering for the climber, stump grinding, and leaving the garden tidier than we found it.
It’s physical and it’s outdoors in all weather. Most days are full ones, but the harder everyone works the sooner we’re done, and some days you’ll get away early.
Mostly domestic work in gardens, so you’re home every night
Never done it before?
That’s fine. If you’re fit, reliable and you actually want to learn the trade, we’ll teach you to use a chainsaw safely and show you how the job’s done properly.
We’d sooner take someone with the right attitude and train them than take someone with tickets who can’t be relied on.
And if you have got experience and tickets and you can run the ground on your own, you’re at the top of that range from day one.
What we're looking for
- Turn up on time and get on with it
- Use your head. See what needs doing and do it
- But ask when you’re not sure. Nobody here minds being asked, and we’d much rather that than a guess
- Take direction from the team leader without being told twice
- Safe, tidy, and decent with customers
- Fit enough for a full day outdoors
- Driving licence preferred but not essential
- Right to work in the UK, and alright with a DBS check for school sites
Being straight with you about the role
Groundwork is a trade in its own right and a good groundie is worth their weight. A crew moves at the speed of the bloke on the ground, not the one in the tree.
Your job is clearing the site and keeping the climber cutting. Doing that well is what gets you noticed here.
It’s also the best way into climbing there is. You learn rigging from the receiving end, you watch how every cut gets planned, and you’ll pick up more in six months on the ground than any course will teach you.

Where it can lead
Plenty of people start on the ground and end up in the tree. We’d far rather grow our own climbers than keep advertising for them.
If that’s where you want to go, say so. Stick with us, show us you’re reliable and keen, and we’ll help you get there. Pointing you at the right tickets and helping towards them, time on the rope on real jobs, and being taught by people who climb every day.
How much we can put behind a ticket depends on the course and how long you’ve been here, so it’s a conversation rather than a promise. What we won’t do is dangle it and never follow through.
As your tickets and your ability go up, so does your rate.
And if you’re happy staying on the ground and being very good at it, that’s a proper job here too. Not everyone wants to climb and nobody gets pushed.
