Esher’s Trees Are Different, and They Need Treating That Way

Most towns in Elmbridge have garden trees. Esher has parkland trees that happen to be in gardens.

The area around Claremont and Esher Place was laid out as designed landscape in the 18th century, and a lot of the housing that followed was built into and around that planting. The result is that Esher gardens routinely contain cedar of Lebanon, mature oak and beech, Wellingtonia, Scots pine and specimen limes — trees that are two hundred years old, structurally significant, and worth a great deal to the property.

These are not trees to take a chainsaw to casually. A badly executed reduction on a mature cedar can’t be undone; you lose the shape permanently and you often trigger decline. Good work on trees like this is conservative, spread over years, and based on what the tree can tolerate rather than what the homeowner asked for on a Saturday morning.

Esher Conservation Area: What You Need to Know

The Esher Conservation Area was designated by Surrey County Council on 31 July 1973, extended by Elmbridge Borough Council on 21 June 1983 to include Clive Road, and extended again on 27 February 2008.

It covers the historic core of Esher — the older part of the High Street, the area around Esher Green and Christ Church, Park Road (Esher’s earliest residential street), Wolsey Road and Wolsey Grove, and Clive Road with its interwar housing. The Grade I listed Church of St George sits inside it.

One detail worth knowing: the 2008 extension specifically included the trees and public verges on Lammas Lane. Elmbridge added trees to a conservation area boundary. That tells you how seriously the tree officer here takes it, and it’s a reasonable indicator of how an application in this area will be assessed.

What that means for your tree

Inside the boundary, any tree with a trunk over 75mm diameter at 1.5m from the ground requires six weeks’ written notice to Elmbridge Borough Council before any work — pruning included. During that window the council can serve a Tree Preservation Order.

With a TPO already in place you need formal consent, which takes longer. Unauthorised work on a protected tree is a criminal offence: up to £20,000 on summary conviction, unlimited in Crown Court for higher value trees. Given what a mature cedar in Esher is worth, “higher value” is not theoretical here.

Esher also has an active Conservation Area Advisory Committee, which means applications in this area genuinely do get looked at by people who know the trees.

Between roughly May and July, look for caterpillars moving nose-to-tail in processions up and down the trunk, and white silken nests where branches meet the stem. The hairs cause skin rashes, eye irritation and breathing problems in people, dogs and horses, and old nests stay hazardous long after the caterpillars have gone.

Do not attempt removal yourself. Do not pressure-wash a nest — that aerosolises the hairs and makes it considerably worse. Keep children and animals well away from the tree.
