The Hersham Village Conservation Area was designated by Elmbridge Borough Council on 30 August 1989. It’s centred on The Green, Vaux Mead and the Memorial Gardens, and takes in most of the properties overlooking those open spaces. It also includes St Peter’s Church and the Hersham Memorial Cross, both Grade II listed. The council’s own designation statement specifically identifies the grouping of buildings around the greens with their mature trees as what gives the area its character. So the trees aren’t a side detail here, the council counts them as part of what it’s protecting.
What that means practically
If your tree sits within the conservation area boundary and has a trunk diameter over 75mm measured at 1.5m from the ground, you must give Elmbridge Borough Council six weeks’ written notice before doing any work to it. That includes pruning, not just felling. During those six weeks the council can decide to place a Tree Preservation Order on it.

If your tree already has a TPO
You need formal consent before anyone touches it, and that’s a longer process than the six-week notice. Working on a protected tree without consent is a criminal offence. Felling or destroying one can mean an unlimited fine, and other unauthorised work, such as pruning, up to £2,500.
