Why Professional Tree Pruning is Essential
Trees that are never pruned tend to develop problems over time. Branches get heavy and start failing, canopies grow into buildings or block out light, and dead or diseased wood goes unnoticed until it becomes a hazard. Regular pruning keeps your trees structurally sound, looking good and safe around your property.
We work to BS3998 standards on all pruning work, which is the industry benchmark for good arboricultural practice.
Our Comprehensive Tree Maintenance & Ivy Removal Services
Every tree and site is unique, which is why Treemedic offers tailored pruning and maintenance options to suit your needs.
Crown Reductions
Crown reduction brings the overall height and spread of the tree down while keeping its natural shape. It is one of the most common jobs we do across Surrey, particularly on trees that have grown close to houses, are starting to overshadow gardens, or need bringing back into proportion. We always aim for the lightest effective reduction to keep the tree healthy long term.
Weight Reductions
Some branches just get too heavy over time, especially on older trees. Weight reduction removes the bulk from specific limbs to reduce the chance of failure during high winds or after heavy rain. If you have had branches come down before or have a tree that concerns you, this is worth looking at before something goes wrong.
Thinning
Thinning opens up the canopy by removing selected branches from within the crown. It lets more light through into the garden, improves air circulation and reduces wind resistance without changing the overall shape of the tree. A well thinned tree tends to be healthier and more stable than one that has been left to grow dense and heavy.
Lifting (Crown Raising)
Crown lifting removes the lower branches to create clearance underneath. Useful where branches are overhanging a driveway, path, or outbuilding, or simply making it difficult to get underneath the tree. We cut back to the branch collar to leave a clean, healthy wound that heals properly.
Ivy and Climber Removal
Ivy is one of those things people often ignore until it becomes a serious problem. Left to grow unchecked it can smother a tree, trap moisture against the bark and hide decay that might otherwise be spotted early. We remove ivy from the trunk and main branches to give the tree a chance to recover. Some root systems will remain in the ground but removing the bulk of the plant stops it regrowing quickly and gives the bark time to recover.
Why It's Worth Doing Properly
Bad pruning causes more problems than no pruning at all. Cuts in the wrong place, at the wrong time of year, or taking too much off can stress a tree, introduce disease and lead to weak regrowth. Our arborists know what they are doing and will always give you honest advice about what a tree needs rather than just cutting to satisfy a brief. All work follows BS3998 guidance and we will tell you upfront if a tree is better left alone.

FAQ
What is professional tree pruning and why is it important?
Professional tree pruning involves the careful removal of selected branches to improve a tree’s health, safety, and appearance. It helps prevent disease, reduces storm damage risk, and promotes strong, balanced growth.
When is the best time to prune trees?
Timing depends on species and goals. Many species suit winter or early summer; some (e.g., Prunus) should avoid winter to reduce disease risk.
What’s the difference between pruning and reduction?
Pruning targets specific branches for health/structure; a reduction uniformly decreases the crown size while maintaining natural shape.
How much can you remove safely?
We follow BS3998 guidance. Excessive removal stresses trees; we’ll recommend the lightest effective intervention.
Will you remove waste?
Yes. All arisings are chipped or removed, and sites are left tidy.
