Originally designated by Surrey County Council on 11 November 1974, with boundaries amended by Elmbridge Borough Council in 1983 and 1996 and an extension added on 10 April 2013. It’s based on the historic road junction of Church Street and Bridge Street and includes the Grade I listed Parish Church of St Mary.

Walton (Riverside)

Designated by Elmbridge Borough Council on 1 December 1975 and extended on 10 April 2013 to take in the open space north of River House. This covers the area known locally as Old Walton, around the 16th century Manor House. Worth knowing: the council’s own designation statement identifies the scale of the buildings, the changes in level and the many mature trees as the features that give the area its special character. The trees aren’t incidental here, they’re part of the reason the designation exists, and the tree officer treats them accordingly.

What that means for your tree

If your tree sits inside either boundary and has a trunk diameter over 75mm measured at 1.5m from the ground, you must give Elmbridge Borough Council six weeks’ written notice before any work. That includes pruning, not just felling. Within those six weeks the council can place a Tree Preservation Order on it.

If the tree already has a TPO, you need formal consent before anyone touches it, and that takes longer than the six week notice. Working on a protected tree without consent is a criminal offence — up to £20,000 on summary conviction and unlimited in Crown Court for higher value trees.
