Weybridge Trees Are Worth Getting Right
Most towns in Elmbridge have garden trees. Weybridge has estate trees that ended up in gardens.
St George’s Hill
Was laid out from 1911 on heathland and woodland, with houses set in large plots among retained mature trees. Over a century on, those trees are substantial specimens, and they’re a significant part of what the properties are worth. Oatlands has a similar story — the old Oatlands Park estate broken up into large residential plots, with the parkland planting left in place.
These are not trees to take a chainsaw to casually. A badly executed reduction on a mature cedar cannot be undone: you lose the shape permanently and you often trigger decline. Good work on trees like this is conservative, spread over years, and based on what the tree can tolerate rather than what the homeowner asked for on a Saturday morning.

The town and the older roads

Weybridge Has Five Conservation Areas
More of Weybridge is protected than almost anywhere else in Elmbridge, and it catches people out regularly.
Weybridge (Town Centre)
Designated by Elmbridge Borough Council on 25 April 1977 and extended on 6 December 2006. It covers the meeting point of Church Street, Bridge Road and Heath Road, plus the churchyard around St James’ Church — Grade II* listed. This was the original focus of the town, near the bridging point of the River Wey. The southern boundary runs to the crossroads where Heath Road meets Mayfield Road and Curzon Road.
Weybridge (Monument Green)
Designated on 28 November 1990. Based on Monument Green and the buildings fronting it at the northern end of the High Street. The council’s own designation statement says its distinct character comes from the grouping of houses around the Greens, “which are further enhanced by fine mature trees along their edges.” The trees aren’t incidental to this designation — they’re named in it. The obelisk itself came from the Seven Dials Monument in London and was re-erected here in 1822 as a memorial to the Duchess of York.
Wey Navigation
A linear conservation area starting at the junction with the Thames and running down to the old Wey bridge at Bridge Road. It’s generally restricted to the Weybridge bankside, and includes Bull Dogs Island.
Brooklands
Designated in 1989, covering the whole of the old race track site and important for its historical links with motor racing and aviation.
Templemere
Designated on 13 June 2017 — a 1960s development of 65 houses set in 12 acres of historic grounds in Oatlands. Unusual as conservation areas go, and the landscape setting is central to why it was designated.
What that means for your tree
Inside any of these boundaries, a tree with a trunk over 75mm diameter measured at 1.5m from the ground requires six weeks’ written notice to Elmbridge Borough Council before any work — pruning included, not just felling. During that window the council can serve a Tree Preservation Order.
With a TPO already in place you need formal consent, which usually takes eight weeks or more. Unauthorised work on a protected tree is a criminal offence: up to £20,000 on summary conviction, unlimited in Crown Court for higher value trees. Given what a mature cedar on St George’s Hill is worth in amenity terms, “higher value” is not theoretical here.
Weybridge also has an active Conservation Area Advisory Committee, so applications here get properly scrutinised.

The Wey, the Thames and Wet Ground
Weybridge sits where the River Wey meets the Thames, and the low ground along both shapes the tree work.
Saturated ground for months of the year means root plates on larger trees have far less anchorage than their size suggests. A mature poplar, willow or crack willow on wet ground doesn’t need an exceptional storm to come over – an ordinary winter one at the wrong moment will do it.
Worth acting on:
- A lean that has developed recently
- Ground lifting, cracking or heaving on one side of the base
- Soil pulling away from the trunk
- A tree that moves at the base in wind rather than flexing in the crown
Crack willow does exactly what the name suggests, and much of the riverside planting along the Wey and the Thames here is at the age where limb failure becomes routine. Regular reduction or pollarding keeps the sail area and weight down, which costs a fraction of dealing with the aftermath.
Worth knowing: the Wey Navigation bankside is itself a conservation area, so trees along that stretch need council notice before any work.

Oak Processionary Moth in Weybridge
Elmbridge sits within the affected zone for Oak Processionary Moth, and Weybridge has a very high oak population — mature garden oaks, boundary oaks on the estates, and specimen trees on large plots where an infestation can go unnoticed for weeks.
Between roughly May and July, look for caterpillars moving nose-to-tail in processions up and down an oak trunk, and white silken nests where branches meet the stem. The hairs cause skin rashes, eye irritation and breathing difficulties in people, dogs and horses, and old nests remain hazardous long after the caterpillars have gone.
Don’t attempt removal yourself and never pressure-wash a nest — that puts the hairs into the air across a wide area. Keep children and animals away from the tree and the ground beneath it.

Do I need permission to cut down a tree in Weybridge?
Very possibly. Weybridge has five conservation areas — Town Centre, Monument Green, Wey Navigation, Brooklands and Templemere — plus a high number of TPOs on mature specimen trees. Inside a conservation area, anything over 75mm trunk diameter at 1.5m needs six weeks’ written notice to Elmbridge before any work including pruning. We check this before quoting.
I've got a large cedar and I want it reduced. Can you do it?
We can, but we’ll want to look at it first and we may advise against a heavy reduction. Mature cedars respond badly to hard pruning and the shape doesn’t come back. Often the right answer is deadwooding plus a light, targeted reduction — better for the tree and better for your property value.
How long does a tree application take in Weybridge?

My tree is near the river and it's started leaning. Should I worry?
Probably, yes. A recent lean combined with lifted or cracked ground on one side suggests root plate movement, and on saturated ground near the Wey or the Thames that’s a tree that can come over in an ordinary winter storm. Get it inspected.
Can I cut back branches overhanging from next door?
You’re entitled to cut back to the boundary line and should offer the cuttings back. If the tree has a TPO or sits in a conservation area you still need consent first, even for overhanging growth. In Weybridge, assume it might be protected until you’ve checked.
