Weybridge Trees Deserve the Right Care
Most towns in Elmbridge have garden trees. Weybridge has estate trees that ended up in gardens.
St George’s Hill
It was laid out from 1911 on heathland and woodland, with houses set in large plots among retained mature trees. Over a century on, those trees are substantial specimens, and they’re a significant part of what the properties are worth. Oatlands has a similar story: the old Oatlands Park estate was broken up into large residential plots, with the parkland planting left in place.
These are not trees to take a chainsaw to casually. A badly executed reduction on a mature cedar cannot be undone: you lose the shape permanently and you often trigger decline. Good work on trees like this is conservative, spread over years, and based on what the tree can tolerate rather than how much someone would like taken off.
Honest advice first
If what you’ve asked for would harm the tree, we’ll say so. Sometimes the answer is “that oak doesn’t need a reduction, it needs deadwooding and a re-inspection in three years”. We earn less from that job, but the tree and the property are better off. Over a decade of climbing has taken Ryan up mature trees in the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Scandinavia, and on a tree of this age and value it’s that judgement you’re really paying for.
The town and the older roads
Around Church Street, Baker Street, Monument Green and Portmore Park you’ve got Victorian and Edwardian plots with mature lime, plane, horse chestnut and cedar, often tight to period buildings with restricted access.
The wider suburbs
Away from the estates, post-war gardens were planted up with cherry, birch, conifer and ornamentals, and a lot of it has outgrown the plot: leylandii screens up to thirty feet, birches crowding the house, cherries decaying at the base.
Those jobs get just as much care from us as the big estate trees.
Weybridge Has Five Conservation Areas
More of Weybridge is protected than almost anywhere else in Elmbridge, and it catches people out regularly.
Weybridge (Town Centre)
Designated by Elmbridge Borough Council on 25 April 1977 and extended on 6 December 2006. It covers the meeting point of Church Street, Bridge Road and Heath Road, plus the churchyard around St James’ Church, Grade II* listed. This was the original focus of the town, near the bridging point of the River Wey. The southern boundary runs to the crossroads where Heath Road meets Mayfield Road and Curzon Road.
Weybridge (Monument Green)
Designated on 28 November 1990. Based on Monument Green and the buildings fronting it at the northern end of the High Street. The council’s own designation statement says its distinct character comes from the grouping of houses around the Greens, “which are further enhanced by fine mature trees along their edges.” So the trees are written into the designation itself. The obelisk itself came from the Seven Dials Monument in London and was re-erected here in 1822 as a memorial to the Duchess of York.
Wey Navigation
A linear conservation area starting at the junction with the Thames and running down to the old Wey bridge at Bridge Road. It’s generally restricted to the Weybridge bankside, and includes Bull Dogs Island.
Brooklands
Designated in 1989, covering the old race track site and important for its historical links with motor racing and aviation.
Templemere
Designated on 13 June 2017, a 1960s development of 65 houses set in 12 acres of historic grounds in Oatlands. Unusual as conservation areas go, and the landscape setting is central to why it was designated.
What that means for your tree
Inside any of these boundaries, a tree with a trunk over 75mm diameter measured at 1.5m from the ground requires six weeks’ written notice to Elmbridge Borough Council before any work, pruning as well as felling. During that window the council can serve a Tree Preservation Order.

With a TPO already in place you need formal consent, which usually takes eight weeks or more. Unauthorised work on a protected tree is a criminal offence. Felling or destroying one can mean an unlimited fine, and other unauthorised work, such as pruning, up to £2,500. When setting a fine, the courts can take into account any financial benefit from the work, such as a boost to the property’s value.
Weybridge also has an active Conservation Area Advisory Committee, so applications here get looked at closely.

The Wey, the Thames and Wet Ground
Weybridge sits where the River Wey meets the Thames, and the low ground along both shapes the tree work.
When the ground by the Wey and the Thames stays waterlogged for months, big trees lose much of their grip. A mature poplar or willow there can come over in an ordinary winter storm, not just a severe one. If one does, our storm guide covers what to do first.
Call us if you notice any of these:
- The tree has started leaning when it didn’t before
- The ground around the base lifting or cracking on one side
- A gap opening between the trunk and the soil
- The whole tree rocking from the base in wind, instead of just the crown swaying
Crack willow is brittle and sheds limbs readily, and a lot of the riverside planting on the Weybridge banks is now old enough for that to happen often. Reducing or pollarding on a regular cycle keeps the weight and wind resistance down, and it’s far cheaper than clearing up after a limb comes off.
The Wey Navigation bankside is itself a conservation area, so trees along that stretch need council notice before any work.

Tree Surgeon in Weybridge: Common Questions
Do I need permission to cut down a tree in Weybridge?
Very possibly. Weybridge has five conservation areas (Town Centre, Monument Green, Wey Navigation, Brooklands and Templemere), plus a high number of TPOs on mature specimen trees. Inside a conservation area, anything over 75mm trunk diameter at 1.5m needs six weeks’ written notice to Elmbridge before any work, including pruning. We check this before quoting.
I’ve got a large cedar and I want it reduced. Can you do it?
We can, but we’ll want to look at it first and we may advise against a heavy reduction. Mature cedars respond badly to hard pruning and the shape doesn’t come back. Often the right answer is deadwooding plus a light, targeted reduction, which is better for the tree and better for your property value.
How long does a tree application take in Weybridge?
A conservation area notice is six weeks from when the council receives it. A TPO consent application is usually eight weeks or longer. So if timing matters, get it in early.

Will you damage my lawn?
We plan where everything lands before we start and work to keep disruption to a minimum. If you’d like boards down over a lawn or a surface you’re particularly concerned about, say so when we quote and we’ll factor it in. Some marking is possible in wet conditions on heavy work, and we’ll tell you upfront rather than surprise you on the day.
My tree is near the river and it’s started leaning. Should I worry?
Probably, yes. A recent lean combined with lifted or cracked ground on one side suggests root plate movement, and on saturated ground near the Wey or the Thames that’s a tree that can come over in an ordinary winter storm. Get it inspected.
Can I cut back branches overhanging from next door?
You’re entitled to cut back to the boundary line and should offer the cuttings back. If the tree has a TPO you need the council’s consent first, and if it’s in a conservation area you need to give six weeks’ notice, even for overhanging growth. In Weybridge, assume it might be protected until you’ve checked.
Are you insured?
Yes, for public liability and employers’ liability, and you can have the certificates before we begin. With trees and houses of this value, check that whoever you use can show you theirs.
What happens to the waste?
