1. Check for power lines. If any part of the tree is touching, near, or has brought down electrical cables, stay back at least 10 metres and call 105. That’s the free national emergency number for power cuts and downed lines, and it routes straight to your local network operator. Do not approach and do not move anything. Cables can be live even when they look dead.
2. Get everyone out of the affected area, including rooms directly under a damaged section of roof. A partially failed tree can move again without warning, particularly if the wind is still up.
3. Do not attempt to move it yourself. Fallen trees are under enormous stored tension. Branches pinned under a trunk can release with lethal force when cut, this is how people are seriously injured every winter. Chainsaws and storm damage are a bad combination for anyone without training.
4. Photograph everything before it’s touched. Wide shots and close-ups from several angles. Your insurer will want them and it’s much harder to evidence afterwards.

- Overgrown branches or a hedge that’s got away
- Storm debris and small deadwood
Working at height in the dark and in wind roughly doubles the risk and the cost. If your situation falls into the second or third group, we’ll say so and book you in at normal rates rather than taking the out-of-hours money.
Storm Damage and Your Insurance
Most home insurance policies cover damage caused by a falling tree, but there are a few things worth knowing before you commit to any work.
What insurers usually want:
- Photographs taken before any clearance work
- A written quote or invoice itemising the work
- Confirmation the contractor was qualified and insured
- Sometimes an assessment of why the tree failed

What’s often not covered: removing the tree itself if it hasn’t damaged anything. Many policies cover damage to your property but not general clearance of a tree that’s simply come down in the garden. Worth checking your wording before you assume.
Do the safety work first. If the site is dangerous, make it safe and sort the claim afterwards. Insurers expect you to take reasonable steps to prevent further damage, so leaving a hazard in place while you wait for a loss adjuster can work against you.

What happens during an emergency visit?
First we make the site safe, cordoning off the area and dealing with any immediate hazard. Anything that doesn’t need doing in the dark, full waste clearance, further cutting back, gets scheduled in for daylight rather than rushed.
Can you liaise with insurers or the council?
Yes. We’ll give you photos, a written report and an itemised quote for your insurer, and if the tree needs TPO or conservation area consent for any follow-up work, we handle that application too.
Is there a surcharge for out-of-hours work?
Yes, working at height in the dark carries more risk, so out-of-hours rates apply. We’ll always tell you the cost before anyone’s dispatched, never after.

What should I do if a tree has hit power lines?
Stay at least 10 metres back and call 105 immediately, the free national number for downed lines and power cuts. Do not approach the tree, the cables, or anything touching them. We cannot begin work until the network operator has attended and made the lines safe. This is not negotiable, and any tree surgeon who says otherwise should be avoided.
What happens if it's not safe to work tonight?
Sometimes the right call is to cordon the area, make it as safe as we can and return at first light. Working at height in the dark and in wind adds risk for everyone. If that’s the situation we’ll say so and explain why.
Do I need council permission for emergency tree work?
There’s an exemption for genuinely dangerous trees, including those with a Tree Preservation Order or in a conservation area. But you still have to notify the council afterwards and you need evidence the danger was real. We handle that notification and document the condition properly.
Will my insurance cover this?
Usually yes for damage caused by a falling tree, though clearance of an undamaged tree often isn’t covered. Photograph everything before work starts, and we’ll provide itemised quotes, invoices and insurance certificates for your claim.
