4. Risk Assessment & Safe Systems of Work
Site-specific Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS) are prepared for all tasks. Controls address risks from falling materials, chainsaws, traffic management and working at height. Emergency arrangements, including aerial rescue and first aid, are briefed prior to work and monitored on site.
5. Training & Competence
All staff hold relevant NPTC/LANTRA qualifications. Refresher training maintains competence. Toolbox talks and site inductions are carried out routinely.
6. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Required PPE includes helmets with chin straps, eye and hearing protection, chainsaw protective trousers/boots, high-visibility clothing and gloves. PPE is inspected regularly, replaced when damaged and worn as required.
7. Machinery, Tools & Equipment
Chainsaws, chippers and other work equipment are maintained and inspected in line with PUWER. Records are retained. Only trained, authorised personnel operate machinery.
8. Manual Handling
Manual handling is minimised using mechanical aids. Staff receive instruction on safe lifting to reduce strain and injury.
9. Working at Height
Climbing and aerial rescue are performed by competent staff. Climbing equipment is inspected by a competent person before use and at regular intervals, with damaged or worn equipment removed from service. Anchor points are assessed and ground communication maintained throughout.
10. Emergency Preparedness
Sites have a trained first aider, with emergency and rescue plans briefed before work. First aid kits, spill kits and fire extinguishers are carried on all vehicles.
11. Accident Reporting
All incidents, near misses and hazards are recorded, investigated and corrective actions implemented. RIDDOR-reportable incidents are notified to the HSE by the Director.
12. Consultation & Communication
We encourage open communication on safety. Feedback informs improvements. Information is shared via toolbox talks, noticeboards and digital channels.
13. Continuous Improvement
This policy is reviewed annually or following significant change, with the aim of continual improvement through learning and best practice.
14. Responsibility & Review
This Health & Safety Policy is signed and endorsed by the Director, who is responsible for its implementation and review.
