Tree Surgeon in Hampton

Looking for a tree surgeon in Hampton? We’re based in Hersham, a short drive away over Hampton Court Bridge, and we work across Hampton, Hampton Hill and the roads around Bushy Park.

Hampton sits on sand and gravel river terraces over London Clay, between the Thames, Bushy Park and Hampton Court. It has more conservation areas than you’d expect, a lot of very old trees, and Richmond’s oak processionary moth problem on its doorstep.

Crown reduction, deadwooding, felling, stump grinding, hedge cutting and 24/7 emergency call-outs. BS3998 standards, NPTC qualified, fully insured, free written quotes.

Conservation Areas All Around Hampton

Richmond has designated a run of conservation areas here: Hampton Village, Hampton Court Green, High Street Hampton Hill, May’s Road, Hanworth Road, Platt’s Eyot, Bushy Park and Hampton Court Park. Hampton Village and Hampton Court Green date back to 1969.

Richmond’s appraisals talk about trees a lot: tree-lined Station Road, the tree-lined approach along Hampton Court Road, and the almost continuous line of mature trees along Bushy Park’s boundary at Hampton Hill.

What that means for your tree

Inside a conservation area, you give Richmond notice through the Planning Portal and the council has six weeks to decide. A tree with a Tree Preservation Order needs consent, which can take up to eight weeks. Even a dead or dangerous protected tree needs five working days’ notice before it’s removed. Richmond’s protected trees page has the full details.

Richmond doesn’t publish an online TPO map, so the quickest way to check is their protected tree enquiry form. Or ask us. We check before quoting and handle the paperwork.

Next Door to Bushy Park

Bushy Park is a Grade I registered park of around 450 hectares, with roughly 4,000 free-standing trees and the famous Chestnut Avenue of limes and horse chestnuts. Ancient oaks dating from the 16th century still stand along its edge at Hampton Hill.

If your garden backs onto the park, those trees aren’t yours to touch. What you do get is shade, leaf fall and a steady supply of seedlings, which is usually what we end up helping with.

Overhanging branches

You can cut overhanging growth back to your boundary, but in a conservation area that still needs notice to the council first. We’ll check before we do anything.

Riverside Gardens and the Islands

Along the river there are mature planes and horse chestnuts at St Alban’s riverside, willows on the aits, and Platt’s Eyot, which was osier willow beds before the boatyards arrived.

Here the Thames is non-tidal (the tidal river ends at Teddington Lock). Work within 8 metres of the bank of a main river can need a flood risk activity permit from the Environment Agency if it could affect the stability of the bank.

If your tree is on the bank, we’ll tell you at the quote whether that applies.

Old oak processionary moth nest on an oak trunk

Oak Processionary Moth in Hampton

Oak processionary moth was first found in Richmond in 2006, and the borough is now in the official OPM Established Area. With so many mature oaks around Hampton, it pays to know what to look for. On private land, removing nests is the owner’s responsibility.

Between roughly May and July, look for caterpillars moving nose-to-tail up and down oak trunks, and white silken nests where branches meet the stem. The hairs cause rashes, eye irritation and breathing problems in people, dogs and horses, and old nests stay hazardous long after the caterpillars have gone.

Don’t try to remove a nest yourself and never pressure-wash one, as that spreads the hairs. Keep children and dogs away from the tree, photograph it from a safe distance and send it to us. Identification is free, and we’re Lantra trained for removal.

Tree Surgeon in Hampton: Common Questions

Do I need permission for tree work in Hampton?

Quite possibly. Much of Hampton and Hampton Hill is in a conservation area, where trees need six weeks’ notice to Richmond before any work, and any tree with a TPO needs consent. We check before quoting.

Can you work on trees backing onto Bushy Park?

Only on your side of the boundary. Trees in the park belong to The Royal Parks. You can cut overhanging branches back to your boundary, but in a conservation area that still needs notice first.

Who deals with a fallen council tree or branch?

Richmond Council. Report street tree problems through their online form, and for a fallen tree or branch out of hours call 020 8891 7999.

How much does a tree surgeon in Hampton cost?

It depends on the tree, the access and what’s underneath it. A hedge trim is a very different job to dismantling a big oak beside a house. Quotes are free and in writing, and the price we quote is the price you pay.

Are you insured?

Fully: public liability and employers’ liability, with certificates sent before we start if you’d like them. Ask any tree surgeon for theirs.

What happens to the waste?

It goes with us. All arisings are handled in accordance with our Duty of Care under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and transferred only to appropriately licensed facilities. Timber can be left cut to size for firewood if you want it. Just say when we quote.
