Tree Surgeon in Oxshott
Looking for a tree surgeon in Oxshott? We’re based in Hersham, a short drive away, and we work across Oxshott village, the roads around Oxshott Heath and the large private estates that make up so much of the area.
Oxshott is unusual for Elmbridge. A lot of it sits on sand rather than clay (the heath was dug for brick-making sand), and the area is full of Scots pine, birch, oak and beech in big gardens on gated private roads. That mix shapes almost every job we do here.
Crown reduction, deadwooding, felling, stump grinding, hedge cutting and 24/7 emergency call-outs. BS3998 standards, NPTC qualified, fully insured, free written quotes.

Big Gardens, Big Trees, Private Roads
Much of Oxshott is on gated private roads, with large houses set in mature, wooded plots. The trees are often tall Scots pine and oak that were part of the heath and woodland long before the houses arrived, and they can stand very close to expensive buildings.
Work like that needs planning: where the timber comes down, how it gets out, where the vehicles go without blocking a private road, and how the gates work on the day. We sort that out at the quote, not on the morning.
Scots pine and sandy ground
Pine on sand behaves differently to oak on clay. Sandy soil drains fast and dries out in summer, and pines don’t regrow from old wood, so a hard cut on a mature pine is permanent. Most of the time the right job is crown lifting, deadwooding and taking out the odd weak limb, not reducing the tree.
And the ordinary work too: laurel and leylandii screening, rhododendron that has taken over, and holly that has quietly become a tree.
Protected Trees in Oxshott
Oxshott doesn’t have a conservation area of its own. The nearest are Esher and Stoke d’Abernon. That doesn’t mean your trees aren’t protected: individual trees and whole groups can still carry Tree Preservation Orders, and older, wooded plots are where they tend to turn up. Elmbridge explains the rules in more detail on its protected trees page.
How to check
Elmbridge’s online TPO map shows protected trees when you zoom in, and you can click a tree to see its order. A tree with a TPO needs formal consent from Elmbridge before any work, pruning included. Working on it without consent is a criminal offence.
We check before we quote, and we write and submit the application as part of the job if one is needed.
Living Next to Oxshott Heath
Oxshott Heath and Woods is part of the Esher Commons SSSI, a mix of heathland and woodland with oak, beech, birch and Scots pine. Elmbridge thins the woodland and clears rhododendron and laurel to stop the heath disappearing under trees.
Heath fire
Dry heath and pine can burn in a hot summer, and Oxshott Heath has had fires before. If your garden backs onto it, keeping dead wood, brash and low pine branches cleared back from fences and buildings is sensible housekeeping.
Trees on the heath belong to the council. If one looks unsafe from your side, Elmbridge’s countryside or tree risk team are the people to call.

Oak Processionary Moth in Oxshott
Elmbridge says oak processionary moth is now established across the whole borough, and Oxshott has no shortage of mature oak in private gardens, where a nest can go unnoticed for a season or two. On private land, dealing with it is the owner’s responsibility.
Between roughly May and July, look for caterpillars moving nose-to-tail up and down oak trunks, and white silken nests where branches meet the stem. The hairs cause rashes, eye irritation and breathing problems in people, dogs and horses, and old nests stay hazardous long after the caterpillars have gone.
Don’t try to remove a nest yourself and never pressure-wash one, as that spreads the hairs. Keep children and dogs away from the tree, photograph it from a safe distance and send it to us. Identification is free, and we’re Lantra trained for removal.

Tree Surgeon in Oxshott: Common Questions
Do I need permission for tree work in Oxshott?
Only if the tree is protected. Oxshott has no conservation area, but Tree Preservation Orders do turn up on older, wooded plots. We check Elmbridge’s records before quoting.
Can you work on a private road or gated estate?
Yes. We plan access, parking and timber removal at the quote so nobody gets blocked in, and we’re happy to give your residents’ association or estate manager notice if they need it.
Can you reduce a big Scots pine?
We’d usually advise against it. Pines don’t regrow from old wood, so a hard reduction leaves bare stubs that never recover. Crown lifting, deadwooding and removing weak limbs are almost always the better job.
How much does a tree surgeon in Oxshott cost?
It depends on the tree, the access and what’s underneath it. A hedge trim is a very different job to dismantling a big oak beside a house. Quotes are free and in writing, and the price we quote is the price you pay.
Are you insured?
Fully: public liability and employers’ liability, with certificates sent before we start if you’d like them. Ask any tree surgeon for theirs.
What happens to the waste?
It goes with us. All arisings are handled in accordance with our Duty of Care under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and transferred only to appropriately licensed facilities. Timber can be left cut to size for firewood if you want it. Just say when we quote.
